“I entered my RAV4 and within two months I’m full until January,” said Kahili Kaihewalu Tianio, a Turo host.
Maui resident Kahili Kaihewalu Tianio is also a Turo host.
“You can set your prices based on the year of the car depending on the finish of the car depending on the type of amenities you have to offer,” Tianio said.
Hosts should also choose a Turo insurance plan, in addition to pricing.
“We have insurance coverage. We also pay a percentage to have that coverage in case something happens, we are covered, ”Tianio said.
For those looking to rent, simply log on to the site and click on an available vehicle and book the trip.
“You can choose what you want to drive and where you want to drive. You can check out the host’s reviews, ”Tianio said.
Tianio tells KHON2 that she earns up to $ 3,000 per month as a host.
“Last week we bought two more cars to add to our fleet and it’s really a success,” said Tianio.
She is not alone. Ryan Costello from the island of Hawaii has worked with Turo since 2017. He makes more than six figures each year.
“It was very hectic and I got about 20 calls a day from people looking for cars,” Costello said.
Turo hosts must pay taxes, as with any income. The state tax office says they must also register with the ministry.
“If they rent the car themselves, they have to pay the car rental supplement like any other rental company,” said Isaac Choy, Hawaii state tax director. “If they use a platform, they become wholesalers and pay the wholesale rate. “
The state continues to work on a solution to the car rental shortage.
“The governor is well aware of the shortage of rental cars. This was brought up at the last cabinet meeting and Director McCartney is reviewing the issue, ”Choy said.
